Burner looking for a peaceful home in Alameda or the East Bay ASAP

Hi there fellow Burners,

I just returned from travels and am looking for a home. Fairly laid-back but responsible chick desiring to move into a peaceful drama-free household. I'm a 39-year-old professional writer/producer and 10-year veteran (?!) Burner with a very loving well-trained kitty (she comes with references as do I). I'd love the space to be a serene retreat from the world but also host dinner parties or have a couple friends over every now and again (though most of my friends are in "The City)". I keep common spaces tidy and have experience living with all sorts of roomies in the past. 420-friendly but not a regular. Good direct communication, integrity and compassion are important to me. I like to do my own thing with some overlap with those i live with ... and if you're sick i'll bring you soup.

Interests: DVDs, reading, board games, festivals, funk, yoga, travel, creativity, Burning Man, volunteering / community, etc (want to get into cooking and gardening at some point too)

Please give me a ring to find out more and see if we'd be a good fit: 510-393-6187

...I started the Oakland Burners Tribe some years ago and now I noticed that Meetup.com had no Burning Man Meetup groups - and that many fine and beautiful spirits were listed as waiting for one. So, I just made a group there too. I have a couple activities in the calendar already, so, if any of you want to join, look it up at:

I hope to see you over at that site too.

This is a benefit for PyroTech Labs. We are going to be raising funds to help fund a massive kinetic sculpture for the burn this year.

$5 suggested donation at the door

DJ's spinning Tech / Psybreaks and heavy Dubstep with a dash of Grime.

There will be a bar taking donations and spreading the joy.

Time and Place
27 February 2009 at 20:00
End Time:
28 February 2009 at 03:00
Location:
1190 28th st
Emeryville, CA

Project details:

Sunrise was developed to inspire individuals to see things from different angles, through compound circles and the possibility of patterns in seemingly chaotic swirls of movement, to help people think outside day-to-day encounters with movement and perspective. A seemingly simple concept, the gyroscopic effect, is elaborated upon to show seven distinct angles of movement and perspective which allows a user, not only an observer, to see the innate shapes these rings create in motion. Users control the speed, direction, number, and visibility of these rings from a remote station through an electronic interface; it allows people to produce, and attempt to reproduce, visible patterns or geometric shapes in its illuminated points of axis.

Our first steps were taken in Sept. 2008, with its initial conception; shortly after designs and schematics were drafted. Building on the prototype began in late October ’08 at the Department of Spontaneous Combustion, the model stands at 10 feet with speed control, and light emitting diodes representing points of light and rotation on the full scale model. The first fundraiser for the project took place in December, making enough to cover the cost of the prototype.

Like the scale model, the full scale version has bearing points placed along the ratio of 5/3 – the golden ratio, or golden spiral(found everywhere in nature, but known mostly due to the mathematician Fibonacci, and the artist Leonardo da’Vinci), which allows the seven independent rings to traverse a spherical realm broken into multiple planes. The effect is 14 points of light moving along regular paths at irregular intervals, encapsulated in a shell of contrasting light; as the sculpture slows down or changes direction the axis lights take on a floating motion and seem to be suspended in a fluid body before being thrown back into motion by a controller. Electro-magnetic latches will be placed at bearing or counter-bearing points to engage specific rings from a control station, which will allow the sculpture to rotate as a single unit, or break apart into a number of various combinations of rings creating different shapes and motions. External forces will also play a role in the way patterns evolve by way of accumulated mass with connected rings and wind resistance, thus allowing the possibility of a kinetic sculpture that has either complete human control, or natural uncontrolled motion. Allowing the opportunity of infinite possibilities grants the sense of both control and chaos in the sculpture making interaction equally important to observation, though neither is independently complete. As people continue to interact with the piece they may find a particular sequence of controls will generate a sequence of events or patterns in what had previously seemed like a chain of random movements of light, these can be reproduced in the same conditions. The intensity of each light set can be controlled independently of other rings which allow particular shapes (i.e. stars, cubes etc) to become more noticeable in a pattern set. The number of variables at play makes the central point of rotation evasive and creates a body of light without attachment to position or restriction of movement.

MECHANICS
When outside lighting falls on project Sunrise the mechanical grace is noticed as the rings ranging from 1.5-13 feet in diameter glide past each other at 3 inches of spacing on every imaginable plane; a single point has up to 1.84467441x10^19 possible positions at any time. Load bearing is close to 1,000 lbs. And balance will be within 2lbs on axis which requires flange mounted bearings with hollow shanks for feeding electrical coupling from the base to the innermost ring. Standing at nearly 20 feet with the base, Sunrise will be visible from over 400ft. away but the movements will begin to make sense the closer an observer gets to it. A safety perimeter will be clearly marked at 25ft in all directions and made most noticeable by the control podium, which will stand four feet tall and house the motor control, the electro-magnetic releases, the light intensity controllers and the blast control. The safety perimeter will also include three additional illuminated pedestals connected by illuminated cable, to deter people from getting dangerously close to the sculpture. Sunrise will be driven by a 240vac, 7.5 hp, single phase electric motor geared down via chain drive and housed in an acrylic casing in the base. A motor control (PC1-75; digital, 1-3phase, 240vac with .1 ~ 6000 sec. response) will run from the control panel, to the motor, allowing safe and accurate control from a remote station. The control center will transmit a radio control signal to RF receivers in the rings for light actuations via Audrino analog/digital transponders (four channel controllers which break into two gateways- primary lights and secondary lights on each bearing point, then dimmer controls – two per gateway). Current for the electro-magnetic latches must be 110v, consequently we will be routing through the center of the bearings with 18pt slip rings which will allow for independent control of each latch. Our user interface itself will be made from a stripped mixing console coupled with photo sensors and variable speed levers cased in a brushed steel “podium”.

OPERATIONS
During the week Sunrise will be attended by a crew of 4 who will facilitate smooth and safe operation, for the first four days, however, the user control will be in a limited operation mode so that it may be run without crew presence. The reason being that we would like to allow people to encounter the piece earlier in the week on a more individual level- without crew or crowds, no instructions, just an open control panel. During the latter half of the week we anticipate more people and the need to facilitate interaction, but with crew assistance users will be able to control more parameters and create more intricate images.

I thought the Pub Crawl was a great success. My lady Starlight and I had a great time!

It was good to meet so many new faces - and finally put faces to the names in the Livermore contigent.

Thank you, Lumina, for putting this together. We'll have to do it again, there are bars we passed up...

This was brought up at the last East Bay Burners get together. Not a SantaCon--would most likely be in Jan. or Feb when we are all bored and need something to do. Lots of possibilities right on and around Park St. What's everyone think?

Gomer Hendrix in Fremont this thursday

I know you all are way up there on your little island and all... But down here in Fremont, we have some good stuff too (once in a while). My favorite local pub - the Mojo Lounge - is hosting our very own Gomer Hendrix and his band this soming thursday (Jan. 22). Come join us in supporting our musical friends at a cool place. It's a full bar with a patio and a dance floor. Small with a good vibe. You should come dance with us. It's only about 15 miles down the 880. And Gomer is a good time anyway, especially in this kind of setting.
Mature Rating on this Tribe

Hi everyone.
Just wanted to throw out this topic to get everyone's thought on the M rating for this tribe. Do you think this is problem? I never quite took the time to figure out why it is such...I think's there's a racy picture somewhere in the album. I don't really like to censor anything but will certainly do so if we all want this tribe to be public.

I know the rating keeps the tribe from being public and people can't even see it to join. Maybe I need to try getting the M removed?

Thoughts?

Ahoy fellow East Bay Burners!

Please join us for my first burner gathering in the East!

This Gathering's theme is:
Adorn your appendages!

Ears for your head? Hillbilly teeth? Giant claws for your feet? Banana Hammocks? Pasties? A cane? Horns?
Adorn yourself & your body parts appropriately! Or else, you will befall the whims of a random party guest, who will have an assortment of hats, glitter encrusted tube tops or elf shoes to choose from. If you have extra adornments you feel would be appropriate for the evening, please feel free to bring & share!

♥

This gathering will start at 9:30 pm on Friday, January 23rd and will be held at the Nuclear Pinapple

The gathering will also include:

♥ Fabulous bartending by Guest Bartender
♥ Burning Man Photo Slide show
♥ Marshmallow Bar for roasting mallows over the firepit!
♥ Cupcakes & other baked goodies by Mary Bee
♥ Screening of Burning Man documentaries/Malcolm in the Middle Burning Man episode

-Donations of $$/ass/playa loot kindly requested at the door.
suggested donation of at least $5 per person - this helps us to host the gatherings regularly.

MORE INFORMATION available on the private tribe - please ask for an invite! I've also got a facebook group.

If someone is interested who isn't on tribe, please direct them to my tribe profile or have them send me an e-mail: snoofing(at)gmail(dot)com

Hope to see you♥!

August 18, RE-FASHION Costume Change and Exchange Recycling Event

SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 2007
11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Humanist Hall, Oakland
390 27th St, between Telegraph and Broadway

Does your alter ego need a makeover? Is your costume closet filled with treasures you haven’t been wearing? Got an unfinished wearable art project that needs a little push of inspiration? RE-FASHION is the solution!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap and modification event. Bring a bag or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories, and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear. There will be a suggested donation, but the focus is recycling, and nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We’ll provide transformation stations, where you can cut, sew, glue, paint, bedazzle, and otherwise renew and combine someone else's rags into your riches.

There will be an outdoor area, where you can supervise your children as they play, and where children’s items will be swapped.

If you’d like to:
volunteer for the event
bring your sewing machine to the event for others to use
help run a transformation station
lead a workshop on modifying clothing
or provide an activity for children

or if you just need more information…

please email refashion2007@gmail.com

Hey,

After much deliberation back and forth between Oakland/Berkeley and Alameda...i finally made the sensible choice - and i am here! I scored a great apartment on the beach! Top flr with great view. So i am in love with this charming little place...and would love to meet people here...i will of course keep my eyes peeled for the next local bar crawl etc. But in the meantime - say hi if you feel so inclined!

Gomer Hendrix has a 3 piece band, acoustic, drums, upright bass
with vocals. Each week at the Harmony Center for the Joyful Spirit
the one hour service features at least 8 to 10 songs by the band.
Services are held at the Veterans Memorial Hall on the corner of
Grand and Harrison by Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland at 11 am.
It's free, and there's plenty of parking, a very liberal celebration for all.
need MP3s ? just go to myspace.com/harmonycenterband

Alameda Conclave

This is a call for interest for any fire performers in the Oakland-Alameda area or beyond (who are willing to drive here) who will committ to forming a conclave to spin in front of the Man at Burning Man this year.

If you are interested in performing within the circle at Burning Man..please post! If we have enough interest we will apply for admission with Crimson. I know there are alot of local spinners who have expressed interest in finding places to practice. We have good choreographers and alot of skill on the island.

All levels and skills are welcome. Drummers are welcome (there is space for drummers in the circle). We need at least two or three fire safeties...and a shin. Shins do not perform but are on radio with Crimson and communicate with the performers during Burn Night.

Also...not to worry...WE WILL FIND A PLACE TO PRACTICE...

who's in?

I will be showing photos of the building of this year's Temple plus images from the last three years of the Burning Man event at the Lucky Juju Pinball Gallery, located at 713 Santa Clara, Alameda, in the parking lot behind Tillie's at Webster and Santa Clara. Opening nite Jan 5 from 6 to 12 pm. If you haven't been to the Juju yet, come check it out-- the place is full of vintage pinball machines you can play while the jukebox never stops. One of A-town's premier attractions, open every Fri. and Sat. nite. See you there, Tim.

New Exercise Options for Alameda!!!

My name is Margo Rose, certified personal trainer, and I've just opened a BEAUTIFUL exercise studio in Alameda. I'm excited to become a part of the community of wonderful people here in Alameda. My specialty is helping people of many ages, sizes and levels of fitness have FUN while becoming more COMFORTABLE and fit. In sessions, we stay VERY aware of any existing injuries and careful about avoiding any new ones. We can do yoga-based exercise, strength training, dance aerobics, outdoor circuit workouts at the beach and of course---AB STRENGTH and great ALIGNMENT for EVERYONE! I offer one-on one and small group sessions. Since most people wait until January to exercise, I'm offering a huge discount on my rates for new clients ready to begin in December. . If you'd like to check out my web site that is just being developed, go to... (www.functionalfitness4you.com)

Also available as a cool fitness opportunity is working out with my Sweetie, Troy. Troy has been studying a wide range of martial arts for 28 years and offers one-on-one and small group sessions. Since he has SO much material to choose from, he offers a wide range of services including very gentle full-body exercise like Tai Chi and martial arts for overall fitness and well-being. He also hold black belts in Japanese Shotokan Karate and Korean Tae Kwon Do as well as having trained extensively in Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu and can do advanced training using those styles. Personally I go to him for self-defense training, which aside from being great exercise, is kept very practical and simple--just a few effective moves I could actually use right away if necessary. Troy served as a military police officer for four years, and one of his jobs was training the other police officers in hand-to-hand combat techniques. He even trained his own supervisor...(but now I'm just bragging...) Troy's web site (which currently is concentrated on the Shaolin Kung Fu) is: www.kungfu.typepad.com .

Hello there...
My name is Margo and my sweetie's name is Troy. We have just moved to Alameda and are loving the beach view and island feel--until it is time for some nightlife, hello???
We are mid 30's/early 40's and looking for cool folks to socialize and hang out with.
I'm a personal trainer and Troy is a martial arts and self-defense instructor. Personally I am really interested in dance (any place to do aerial dance around here?). Troy is a big fan of rare books especially about the martial arts, healing arts and occult. We have both travelled quite a bit internationally.

In general we are both really active, friendly and FUNNY. Finding some folks with laid back senses or humor would be a plus.

Looking for room in East Bay to park my small RV, a mechanic, and a room for rent

Hey everyone, sorry I just joined tribe today so my profile is lacking, but I also have a profile at www.myspace.com/starrdst81. Anyways, I sold everything and went to Burning Man determined to start a new way of life that was in tune with my beliefs and values. I travelled to San Francisco after the burn and realized that it was not a city where you could just "crash" by finding cool people. Anyways, that's all good. So I got an RV which seemed like a good deal, but it had been sitting for awhile and there have been several problems since then and now I'm stranded on King St. and Ashby in Berkeley and any day the city is going to tow me away. So my post is two fold. Does anyone know a good mechanic that could come to my RV? Also, does anyone own or know of someone who owns a patch of land - a parking space or piece of yard that's not being used, etc. . . where I could park my RV for a rental cost? I don't need any connections. I'm really desperate at this point and am hoping there are people in this area as helpful as they were at Burning Man. I'm trying to get involved in the wonderful things going on here but have a hard time doing that without a steady living situation. So if you also know of anyone with a room for rent or something like that, please let me know. And if you just want to hang out, that would be cool too!
Thanks!

The Amish practice of "barn raising" is a wonderful community practice. While we may not be ready to grow beards, wear homespun bonnets or give up our technology, we do want to follow this admirable example of spirit-in-action.

Let's all help one another. Together, we can fix up that room, redo that yard, build that shed, clean up that garage... All while building community and making friends. This is the Gift Economy actualized!

Info on Traveling in California

Info on Traveling in California

Ok Burners,

As promised I am being a serious Sidhe.

For those of you who are traveling through California I have the following link for you.

http://www.dot.ca.gov/

This is the OFFICIAL website for the California Department of Transportation a.k.a. Caltrans. On this page you can type in a highway number and it will tell you of any detours and lane closures.

This is good to know since one of our most popular highways, Hwy 1, has a big detour at the infamous Devil’s Slide near Pacifica. They are fixing Hwy 1 as we speak but I do not think they will finish in time for the Burn.

Another warning is US 101 from San Rafael to the Oregon State Line. As soon as US 101 hits a small town there will be a local cop at the town limits. If they are bored they will follow you to edge of town. This is how the towns make their money. DO NOT GO THE SPEED LIMIT BUT UNDER IT. Know what I mean.

Another area to watch out for, especially if you are driving a truck or towing trailer, is I-80 from the I-80/I-680 interchange to the City of Fairfield. Fairfield is where the CHP 9-1-1 dispatch is. Plus, there is a major truck scale there. There are tons of CHP on that strip. If you see the CHP on the side of the road and slow down and speed up when you are past him… DON’T!!! IT IS A SPEED TRAP!!! There is another roller a mile or so down the road. When you get the hills near Fairfield watch out there too!!! Cops hang out on the curves!!! The CHP on this section of highway do not necessary drive Crown-Vics or motorcycles. They have a fleet of black pickup trucks with camper shells. So watch it folks

I would also like to take the time to tell everyone to “SLOW FOR THE CONES”. When you come across a construction site PLEASE SLOW DOWN!!! Caltrans have many accidents during the holiday season in the construction zone. May of my friends are working out there. We all have families. We all want to go home. So please stay within the posted speed limit in ALL construction zones. Plus the fact that CHP might be running COZEEP and the fines are doubled!!!

Drive Safe

Cross the Sidhe

Burning Man informal get together at Kings X (Oakland) this Saturday....maybe 9:30pm?

Hello Alameda Burner-types,

Some local folks from my village, Hushville (few to none of which I know - such is the nature of a 200 person village - the folks I camp with are from Seattle, Chicago, Toronto, etc.), are planning on a small get together at Kings X this Saturday. Nothing formal - just some folks sippin' some libations. By all means, in the immortal words of Monty hall, C'mon down!

I will likley have my black top hat on. If there are multiple people at the bar with top hats, I will be the one not wearing underwear.

Kings X is at 4401 Piedmont Ave at Pleasant Valley Road.

Hope to see you there!

Is living in Alameda anywhere as cool as SF?

I'm new to town, subletting in Oakland while looking for an apt. I know rents are cheaper in Alameda, and the commute will be fine as i work nights, however, i really wanna have the SF experience, the culture etc, and i fear that i may be missing out on all that if i live in Alameda. I have been down Park st and that looked kinda cool, but can anyone enlighten me? If i live in SF - the Sunset appeals to me...but does Alameda compare at all ??

Thanks!

Rides Offered to BRC

I know this is early... but for some poor Burner it may decide if they are going to BM or not.

DETAILS

I will be offering a ride from the Bay Area to BRC. I have a Ford Ranger with a passenger and two jump seats open. The passenger seat will be reserved for a large person. The two jump seats are facing each other and cramped. If a large person does not take up my offer then we can rotate seats on the way up to BRC.

My Ranger is in excellent shape with AC, open rear window, cup holder in the back, XM radio. I have a bike (with lock) rack that can hold up to 4 bikes. The bed of my Ranger has a tonnou so your stuff will be locked for all road stops. SPACE IS VERY LIMITED!!! YOU MIGHT HAVE TO CARRY SOME OF YOUR STUFF ON YOUR LAP!!!

Routes, Stops and Pick Up Locations

I live in Petaluma. I will pick up anyone in SF, North Bay, East Bay or along the final route. If you really really really in need of a ride and you are not in these locations... then lets talk!

I will be making rest stops at all rest stops. Potty breaks and need for a smoke (NO TOKE) or strech are very much welcome! So are taking pictures.

I have two routes in mind.

1. 13 hour trip up hwy 120, yosemite, hwy 395, Reno, and BRC.

2. Hwy 80 with a meet up with other Burners at the El Dorado Buffet (very yummy) in Reno.

RULES

1. No smoking in my truck.
2. NO DRUGS!!!
3. Must have ticket in had. NO WILL CALLS OR WALK UPS.
4. Be well bathed.
5. Baggage Yes!!! Emotional bagage No!!!
6. No childern in lap.
7. Be Fun!!!

Why???

Why I am doing this??? I have missed so many Burns because I had no car or rides.

Please let me know

Casual Burner gathering in Oakland this Friday night (04/07) at King's X...maybe around 9pm or so...?

Tis the season to start thinking about costumes and art cars and what new ideas we have for showering in the desert...so, c'mon out and share some merriement with some like-minded folks...

It looks like we have a couple takers from the Oakland Burners Tribe for some good Burner rambling...I have no idea what or if they renamed King's X since they got a new owner and morphed it into a island vibe joint, but, it is at...

4401 Piedmont Ave
Oakland, CA 94611
(near intersection of Pleasant Valley Ave and Piedmont Ave)

I will be the one with the thong SpongeBob panties on...err....I guess they may not be that visible - maybe I'll just wear my cowboy hat??? Or some fur....or a top hat, yeah, the top hat...maybe shout out "Marco" and I'll/ we'll shout back "Polo" - something just too darn cute like that...

Anyone going to the Flambe Lounge bowl Saturday night???

Tri Valley?? St. Pats day Happy Hour and Party

I need a playa fix! I was just surfing a website that actually sells bottles of playa dust, don't ya love it.

Anyway, heres my story. I live out in Livermore and am looking for fellow burners in the area. I've hooked up with some Sacramento burners and Reno burners and San Jose burners but I really need some local love!! I've been picking around the list serves and various tribe sites and this one seems to be the most promising. Anyway, I figure the best way to find burners is to invite them to a party. And I know of one on St. Pats day. I'm thinking we meet up for happy hour somewhere in Pleasanton, get to know each other for an hour or two and then head over to the party afterwards. The party is in Livermore.

This invitation is open to anyone in the extended area, not just the Tri-Valley. I just figured I would use tri-valley in the subject line since, well, since, well, since it made sense??

I haven't really picked a place in Pleasanton, thought I'd wait and see if I heard from you & see if anyone has any suggestions.

Soooooo, send a reply and let me know if you're up for this and if you have a suggestion on where to meet. Also, let me know where you live (city). Other than that, get yer green fur on and lets party!

Warmth.

Lysa

ps, St pats day is Friday, March 17th.

Hi there - I was referred to your Tribe through the East Bay Burners listserv, which seems to be underutilized. I am new to BM and am looking for a diverse and experienced group to go with. I'm happy to pitch in on all aspects, but just want to get an idea of what will be expected from me financially, supplies-wise, etc. If anybody has any suggestions on where to look, or if you are part of a group that's open to having a new person, etc., please let me know! I've posted to craigslist, as well.
Thanks! You can e-mail me at: heydes@hotmail.com

The suave swingers who gave Oakland the Conga Lounge, along with an ace Trader Vic's bartender, have teamed up to bring the exotic isle of Alameda its own tiki bar, due to open this Spring - they promise both drinks and decor will be absolutely authentic and awesome! Here is your first peek at...

Alas, I am stuck here in DC with not a tiki bar in sight. Have a drink with an umbrella in it for me!

Save Black rock from the coal plant!!

Here is the link to the petition against the proposed Sempra coal
fired power plant that is planned to be located just outside Gerlach. It would be the largest coal-plant in the US, and it is the old dirty coal technology. It will essentially change the land out there forever if we don't act now and sign this petition!

The link will take you to the petition page which is part of a
very informative website that has been developed to inform the public about this coal plant, SIGN IT NOW!!

www.nevadacleanenergy.org/takea...n.html

Please pass this link on to your lists and anyone who can help stop this plant from going up...... Remember, the
plume from this plant would extend hundreds of miles into what is currently one of the most pristine areas in the continental US.

Here is a list of how it would effect the area:

The plant will release more than 50 dangerous pollutants, including arsenic, lead and mercury, into the air we breathe.

The power generated will be exported to Southern California, where the law prohibits this type of plant to be built.

Coal-fired plants are the nation’s largest source of mercury pollution, known to affect children’s learning abilities even with exposure to small amounts.

Clean alternatives are available that would cost the same and produce the same quantity of electricity.

The plant will consume 14.2 millions of gallons of scarce desert ground water every day—over 5 billion gallons a year—diverting water from plants and drinking holes relied upon by deer, elk and wild horses.

At more than twice the size of the Statue of Liberty, the plant’s 650-foot tall smoke stack will tower over the desert landscape.

The plant’s coal burner emissions would be equivalent to adding about two million cars to the roadways.

During the five years of power plant construction, an estimated 100-200 trucks and 800 workers will congest normally quiet roadways daily.

Thank you and long live the Black Rock Desert,
Justin Credible

Just found this tribe and would love to meet some of you. Any crafters out there? I have a craft night (fridays 7-10pm) at my shop in Alameda and thought it would be a great way for us to hook up and work on our projects together. Or come in a meet me anytime. cheers, Julie
